Movie & Discussion: Miss Representation
Thursday, April 03, 2014, 06:00am - 08:00pm
The film Miss Representation will be screened on April 3, 6:00-8:00 p.m., in Spain Auditorium, followed by a discussion facilitated by Dr. Maureen O’Brien and Dr. Kelly James.
The film explores the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America, and challenges the media’s limited portrayal of what it means to be a powerful woman. It also examines the ways media uses gender to show sexist messages of women and their value. By emphasizing body issues over intellectual contributions, women are reduced to one-dimensional versions of themselves. As Katie Couric comments in the film, "Media can be an instrument of change, and that change can be to promote diverse qualities or to show women are only as good as their looks."
