How do I connect my personal computer to the CBU network?

To connect your personal wireless device to the wireless network, please refer to the Wireless Instructions. To connect a wired device to our network, please register your mac address by visiting HELPDESK and select "Network" under request type. The form will ask you "New device?" Select "Yes" and proceed to complete the form.

What is a MAC Address?

Each network interface device (or NIC) within your computer has a unique identifier known as a "MAC address". Your computer's ethernet (wired) port as well as your wireless card each has a unique MAC address. Before your computer can connect to the CBU Ethernet network, your MAC address must be registered with the ITS Help Desk. Doing so prevents unauthorized users from "leeching" our network connectivity, which could potentially slow down the network for legitimate clients. In addition, it allows ITS to restrict those who abuse the network or violate the network services terms of use.

Instructions for aquiring your MAC address are available for

  • Windows 98/2000/XP/Vista/7
  • Mac OS X
  • Linux/UNIX

What is a "Jack Number"?

A serial number will appear above or below the jack in which you will insert your network (ethernet) cable. Please provide us with these characters when registering a new wired network device. Please note that one of the ports on your panel is a voice port! It may be embossed with the word "Voice" or its serial number may end in "V". If your serial number ends in "G", this is your network port (although not all jack numbers end in "G").

What is VPN and how do I use it?

VPN (Virtual Private Network) allows any faculty or staff member to connect to the CBU intranet from anywhere in the world. This can be used to perform tasks such as accessing a network drive or other systems not accessible from the internet. Please follow the Instructions for setting up VPN and do not hesitate to contact the Helpdesk if you need assistance.
