Microsoft Systems Administrator and Desktop Support

Summary

The Microsoft Systems Administrator, reporting to the Dean of Information Technology Services, performs data center systems engineering, systems administration, and centralized operations and management of the university’s computing facilities and environment. The environment includes Unix/Linux servers, Microsoft servers, appliances, SANs, Tape Backup, racks, power, UPS, and air conditioning in two raised floor computer rooms.

The role is responsible for hands-on raised-floor operations, Microsoft systems administration, system performance, metrics collection and reporting, capacity planning, hardware lifecycle management, rack space, system installations, secure system builds, system standards and documentation, system monitoring, logging, alerting, alert response, system backups, virtualized server environments, patching, Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware, vulnerability scanning, and remediation, service and maintenance contracts.

The role is also responsible for planning, maintenance and support for ITS hardware (PCs, printers, etc.) assigned to all staff, hardware and software which makes up the campus ID card, and electronic door locks and systems.

Working Conditions

Hours are mostly 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, plus system maintenance at night and on weekends; office setting and raised floor computer room setting. On-call 24x7 for emergencies and support. Must be able to lift 40 pounds and install server equipment into equipment racks and in office areas. Frequent walking and standing. Location of user hardware may require walking long distances and ascending stairwells. Access to user hardware may also be constrained by confined / tight spaces, therefore requiring the ability to bend / stretch as necessary. May be exposed to dust and dander, as user working environments vary. Must have valid driver’s license and own transportation.
