UNIX/Linux Systems Administrator

Summary

The UNIX/Linux Systems Administrator, reporting to the Dean of Information Technology Services, performs data center systems engineering, systems administration, and centralized operations and management of the university’s UNIX and Linux computing facilities and environment. The environment includes Unix/Linux servers, Microsoft servers, appliances, SANs, Tape Backup, racks, power, UPS, and air conditioning in two raised floor computer rooms. The role is responsible for hands-on raised-floor operations, UNIX and Linux system administration, system performance, metrics collection and reporting, capacity planning, hardware lifecycle management, rack space, system installations, secure system builds, system standards and documentation, system monitoring, logging, alerting, alert response, system backups, virtualized server environments, patching, Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware, vulnerability scanning, and remediation, service and maintenance contracts.

Duties and Responsibilities (Essential)

• Manages Raised Floor Environments:
  • Raised Floors
  • Wiring under floors
  • Two nfinity UPS systems
  • Manage and monitor air conditioning systems, temperature, and humidity in raised floor rooms
  • Timely shutdown of the servers in the event of a power failure
  • Timely startup of the servers after the power failure has ended
  • Manages service and maintenance contracts for the raised floor environment and provides costing and estimates to the Dean’s budget process
• Performs Systems Engineering in a multi-server mixed operating environment
  • Operational Capacity Planning, Sizing
  • Engineer appropriate physical and virtual systems, servers, appliances, and environments
  • Engineer appropriate Storage Area Networks and Storage Servers
  • Hardware lifecycle management, refreshes, migrations
  • Rack space standards, planning, and documentation
  • Secure system build and configuration standards, procedures, and documentation
  • Evaluation of best methods for storing, backing up, and securing data
  • Perform initial server rack installations, operating system installations, secure configuration and patching per security standards, and turnover for administration and operation
  • Initial set up, backing up the files on the servers, patching the servers regularly, secure configuration
  • Develops Operational Standards, Procedures, Practices, Documentation
  • Develops Security Standards, Procedures, Practices, Documentation
  • Manages, plans, and reports quarterly on software licenses utilization
  • Implements and manages industry standard strong encryption methods where appropriate o Engineers for compliance, security, and privacy; and assists internal and external auditors reviewing these areas.
• Performs Computer Operations o Performs and Manages System Monitoring, Logging, Alerting, Responding
  • Maintain and Operate Backup Tape Library System o Manage, maintain, and operate physical and virtual systems and environments
  • Manage and operate the weekly backup processes, change backup tapes, recycle backup tapes, label backup tables, send full backups for the week to the offsite vault, receive tapes back from the offsite vault, and make sure that backups are available for every day in the last 30 day period and at least one full backup a month for the last six months.
  • Restore files from backup as needed
  • Backup the Windows XP computer running AXS software in the registrar's office
  • Manage and perform day to day operations
  • Visually monitor equipment for failure indicators (LEDs, Lights, etc.)
  • Manage hardware repairs, operating system software troubleshooting and corrections, related to the servers/network devices
  • Monitor servers and network devices for problems and anomalies o Manages service and maintenance contracts for Operations and provides costing and estimates to the Dean’s budget process
• Manages and Performs Systems Administration
  • Administer Microsoft systems and servers
  • Administer UNIX and Linux systems and servers
  • Administer User Identity and Security systems and services
  • Administers some appliances and centralized environment-wide network services, like NTP
  • Administer NETWORKER backup software o Administer VMware virtualization products
  • Securely installs and configures services like Apache, MySQL, DNS, LDAP, PAM, Joomla, Oracle, and Radius
  • Plans, tests, and installs server security patches and other needed patches
  • Administer centralized anti-virus, anti-malware, and similar tools
  • Administer host intrusion detection and prevention
  • Administer host file integrity monitoring
  • Administer Compellent Storage Array
  • Perform periodic server vulnerability scans & remediation
  • Administer User Identity and Security
  • Provides Operational Metrics & Reporting
  • Acts as backup for the Microsoft Administrator
  • Support industry standard infrastructure functions and services like Active Directory, LDAP, Kerberos, SMTP, TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, and NTP.
  • Performs server performance tuning
  • Works with the Microsoft Systems Administrator to integrate UNIX/Linux systems into Active Directory
• Project Management
  • Manages engineering, administration, operational, and implementation projects as assigned

Required Job Qualifications

• Two years of college with relevant experience
• Two years of successful experience with similar roles and responsibilities
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Big picture understanding of how technology relates to business
• Must be a results-oriented team player with a friendly and positive customer service attitude
• Willingness to learn new operating systems and platforms
• Unix/Solaris/Linux system administration
• Server Infrastructure Systems Engineering
• Basic Network Understanding
• Computer Operations
• Two years supervisory experience of technical staff members

Preferred Job Qualifications

• 4 year degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, MIS, or related field
• Unix/Linux system builds, security, administration, configuration, tuning, and scripting
• Microsoft system builds, security, administration, configuration, tuning, and scripting
• Training and Certification in Microsoft, Linux, PMP, MySQL, Oracle
• SAN Administration
• Advanced Network Understanding
• VMWare and Virtual Machine Administration
• Administrative knowledge of network infrastructure services, like DNS, firewalls, routers, proxy servers, traffic shaping, load balancers, SSL certificates, and external server hosting, and TCP/IP network protocol architecture and implementation details, network security, SSH, SSL, and SFTP protocols, and mobile/WIFI technologies
• Scripting in UNIX/Linux shells, C, python, perl, php, Microsoft cmd, PowerShell, VB, VBA, .Net

Working Conditions

Hours are mostly 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, plus system maintenance at night and on weekends; office setting and raised floor computer room setting. On-call 24x7 for emergencies and support. Must be able to lift and install server equipment into equipment racks. Frequent walking and standing. Must have valid driver’s license and own transportation.
