Memphis- Christian Brothers University (CBU) will mark its 140th graduation by holding its 2011 Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 9:00 a.m. outdoors at Signaigo Field on the CBU campus. This is the University’s first ever on-campus outdoor commencement.
More than 460 undergraduate and graduate students will be receiving their degrees from CBU at this historical event. In addition, the University will be honoring its Golden Jubilarians, members of the Class of 1961, some of whom will be present for this commencement celebration.
Prior to Commencement, the CBU Baccalaureate Prayer Service will be held on Friday, May 13, at 7:00 p.m. in the University Theater on the CBU campus. Father Robert Marshall, pastor at the Catholic Church of the Ascension, is the keynote speaker.
Father Robert, a native Memphian, is a graduate of St. Michael Catholic School, Christian Brothers High School, and Christian Brothers College (now University) where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1980. He completed his Juris Doctorate in 1983 at Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis) and practiced law for 12 years in both St. Louis, MO and Memphis, TN. In 2008, he was inducted into the CBHS Hall of Fame.
In 1995, discerning a call to priesthood, Father Robert entered Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, LA. Father Marshall received his Master of Divinity degree from Notre Dame and was ordained to the priesthood in 2000, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception by Bishop J. Terry Steib, S.V.D. Since 2004, Father Robert has been the pastor at the Catholic Church of the Ascension. He also serves as a diocesan Master of Ceremonies and is a member of the Diocesan Pastoral Planning Committee, the College of Consultors, the Priests’ Personnel Board, the Vocations Committee and the secretary of the Presbyteral Council.
The University grants the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Science and Mathematics, Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Education, Master of Science in Educational Leadership, Master of Business Administration, Master of Engineering Management and Master of Science in Engineering Management.
In the event of rain or other bad weather, the Commencement ceremony will take place at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church (70 N. Bellevue Blvd.).
