First and Only in Memphis
Memphis — Christian Brothers University (CBU) is offering a NEW Physician Assistant Program beginning January 2012. CBU’s program is the first and only Physician Assistant Program in Memphis. Its inaugural class will be comprised of 32 students who will be able to earn a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies within 27 months (seven continuous semesters). The Physician Assistant Program allows students to prepare for one of the Top Seven Growth Professions.
The CBU Physician Assistant Program will be housed on the University campus and offered through a cohort-based program consisting of 110 credit hours. The curriculum will be delivered through traditional campus-based methods with clinical rotations located at sites throughout the Memphis metropolitan area, one of the nation’s leading medical centers. Using newly renovated space for both the didactic and laboratory components of the program, the curriculum will focus on six major competency components: medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, patient care, professionalism, practice-based learning and improvement, and systems-based practice. One new cohort will be accepted each year.
With the rising need for healthcare providers, Program Director Mark John Scott, PA-C expressed his enthusiasm for the new program, “As a practicing physician assistant in the Memphis area for nearly 30 years, I am pleased Christian Brothers University has taken the initiative to develop the first PA educational program in this region of the Mid-South. Memphis and the surrounding area face a shortage of primary care providers. By developing a quality PA program in one of the nation’s leading medical centers, CBU will take an active role in helping to address this shortage.”
Physician Assistants are licensed to practice medicine, issue prescriptions, and practice in all medical fields including primary care, internal medicine and subspecialties, as well as surgical and emergency care. The PA’s scope of practice may also include education, research, and administrative services.
Applications are currently being accepted for the first cohort that will begin January 2012. For more admission requirements and to learn more about CBU’s new PA program, visit www.cbu.edu/PAS or contact the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies at PAS@cbu.edu or call (901) 321-3291. ###
