CBU Gallery Presents “Selections from the Metal Museum”

Memphis-The Beverly and Sam Ross Gallery at Christian Brothers University (CBU) is proud to announce the exhibit “Selections from the Metal Museum” featuring work from the National Ornamental Metal Museum beginning August 19 through October 14. An opening reception will be held on Friday, August 19, 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the gallery on the lower level of Plough Memorial Library.

The exhibition is comprised of objects from the permanent collection of the Metal Museum and pieces on loan from local artists. It includes 20 metal art objects made within the last 30 years- nearly the age of the museum- all of which are examples of various explorations in steel, copper, silver, tin and enamel through techniques such as forging, fabricating, rasing, chasing and repousse and weaving. Two of the featured artists are Richard Prillaman, master metalsmith and retired Memphis College of Art professor whose works have been exhibited internationally, and Logan Hirsh, recipient of the Rickert-Ziebold Trust Art Award whose work blends the architectural and sculptural.

Art from “Selections from the Metal Museum”Leila Hamdan, Registrar/Collections Manager of the Metal Museum, noted that the exhibit will give viewers an insight into the Museum and the work of metalsmiths. “It was my intention to provide an overview of the Metal Museum’s collection by selecting objects that are varied in material, technique and artistic vision. The work is adventurous, joyous and resolute, which I hope will inspire and bring happiness to the viewers as well as encourage people who have not visited the Metal Museum to do so.”

Since its opening in 1979, the Metal Museum remains the only institution in the United States devoted exclusively to the advancement of the art and craft of fine metalwork. The museum promotes metalwork through exhibitions, collections and conservation. Serving as a home to the metalsmith community, the museum is also an educational facility and training ground for young artists.

In the foyer of the gallery, a collection of photography by Paula Cravens will be displayed. Also, new additions to the Beverly and Sam Ross Studio Glass Collection will, for the first time, be exhibited on the main floor of the Plough Library.

Hours at the Beverly & Sam Ross Gallery are Monday-Thursday, 7:45 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.; Friday, 7:45 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; Saturday, closed; and Sunday, 1:00-11:00 p.m. Hours may vary due to university schedules. Call (901) 321-3243 to verify, or visit the website at www.cbu.edu/library/gallery. ###
