The Commercial Appeal published a guest editorial by Dr. John Smarrelli Jr., CBU President, in its Saturday, August 31 edition. The editorial, entitled “Dual enrollment lets teens ‘try on’ college,” advocated dual enrollment as a tool to improve postsecondary outcomes for students who tend to be underrepresented in higher education.
Dr. Smarrelli also recommended finding a statewide solution to the tuition gap — the difference between Tennessee Lottery funds and actual tuition — and making dual enrollment available to a wider range of students. “If colleges implement streamlined, multi-tiered eligibility requirements, high school students with differing abilities will be able to take college courses in the areas for which they are ready, even if they are not prepared for college coursework in other disciplines,” he writes.
