Exchange Program at FH Joanneam in Bad Gleichenberg, Austria

Located in the eastern sector of the Styria Bundesland (state) in Austria, Bad Gleichenberg is in the heart of what is considered the country's spa region. The seven mineral springs bubbling up from the depths of the earth in Bad Gleichenberg have been used since Roman times and are still the basis for a wide range of natural health treatments. The leisure opportunities in Bad Gleichenberg include nature experiences in the picturesque rolling landscape of climatically favoured eastern Styria, day trips in the region and a wide variety of sports activities. The special strengths of the region lie in tourism, wellness, health and eco-technology. Bad Gleichenberg has a long tradition as a spa resort and training centre for the tourism and hotel industry, which makes it an ideal location for the FH JOANNEUM health service courses.

Hospitality and Tourism Concentration

CBU through collaboration with FH Joanneam in Bad Gleichenberg, Austria is offering a new concentration within the Business Administration degree program. The Hospitality and Tourism Management concentration educates managers who can organize and implement touristic offers in the hospitality and leisure fields.

CBU students that complete the Hospitality and Tourism concentration will spend three months (October-December) studying at the partner university in Bad Gleichenberg.

Courses

All courses in the Hospitality and Tourism Concentration are taught in English each fall semester (October-December). Courses in this new concentration include Introduction to Tourism (4 credit hours), Foundation in Hospitality Management (3 credit hours), Event Management (1 credit hour), Applied Project in Tourism (4 credit hours), and Practicum/Project in Hospitality Management (3 credit hours). Business Administration majors can add Hospitality and Tourism Management as a second concentration, or it could serve as their only concentration requirement. Accounting majors looking for extra credit hours in order to sit for the CPA exam may also find this concentration appealing.

Other courses are available to students outside of the Hospitality and Tourism Concentration; some courses are taught in English but most are in German. One of the courses taught in English during summer session is Sport in Austrian Culture, it is being co-taught by CBU's Dr. James Allen, and is completely in English.
