Englert, a CBU Alumnus who served three decades as the CEO of Christian Brothers High School, will lead the University effective June 1
Memphis, Tenn – May 2, 2024—The Christian Brothers University Board of Trustees proudly announces that Brother Chris Englert, as beloved among CBU alumni, faculty, and staff as the founding Brothers, has been selected to serve as Interim President of the University. His lifelong dedication and integral role within the order of the De La Salle Christian Brothers and its educational family have prepared him well for this position.
A native of Cincinnati, Englert took his vows as a Christian Brother in 1974 and came to CBU, then called Christian Brothers College, as a scholasticate and graduated in 1977 with a degree in Humanities. He also holds a Master of Arts in Religious Studies from La Salle University in Philadelphia and a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. He returned to Memphis in 1988 to take the position of Vice Principal at Christian Brothers High School (CBHS); after one year, he was promoted to CEO (Principal/President) and served in that leadership role until 2018. He has also served as Auxiliary Provincial for the Midwest District of the Christian Brothers and served on the CBU Board of Trustees from 2011 to 2023.
“I cannot think of a more respected leader to guide our students at this pivotal time in the University’s history,” said Emily Greer, President of the CBU Board of Trustees. “Brother Chris knows the organization and represents the values that each of us holds dear, and we feel honored that he has accepted our offer to serve in this new capacity.”
Brother Chris says that while the opportunity was unexpected, he sees it as a chance to reinforce the Lasallian Legacy, which he feels shaped his personal and professional life.
“It is an honor to be asked to serve this great institution that not only provided an education and career path but helped to grow my faith and value system,” said Englert. “This is a full-circle moment, and I look forward to reminding the community why this institution has had a significant impact on students, just like me, for more than 150 years.”
Virtual interviews with Brother Chris will be available on Friday, May 3, 2024, upon request.
