Race & Literature: Discussion & Dessert
Additional Details
Peter Brathwaite’s Twitter-born digital project, Rediscovering Black Portraiture, started a social media campaign to “speak back” to colonialist representations of Black people from the age of transatlantic slavery. In 2020, Brathwaite’s Twitter post—a photograph of him parodying an eighteenth-century portrait of an anonymous Black servant—inspired social media users to amplify the voices of Black persons from the past by creating and posting their own re-portraits. Join us to discuss Kerry Sinanan’s article, “Heterogeneous Blackness: Peter Brathwaite’s Eighteenth-Century Re-Portraits”, and the power of representation. The Honors Program will provide beverages and treats from a locally black owned business: The Four Way for all students and guests to enjoy!
