Christian Brothers University (CBU) was recognized by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) and other key organizations for its remarkable contributions to the Memphis community over its 153-year history.
A Legacy of Excellence and Service
Founded in 1871, CBU has remained a pillar of education, innovation, and service in Memphis. As part of TNECD’s initiative to honor organizations with over a century of contributions to Tennessee’s economic and cultural vitality, CBU was celebrated for its role in preparing leaders in engineering, business, sciences, and the arts. Rooted in the Lasallian tradition of faith, service, and community, the university has fostered economic development, civic engagement, and regional progress, remaining a cornerstone of Memphis’ growth.
“We thank CBU for the invaluable service provided to this community through education and by preparing talent for the workforce,” said Blake Swaggart, TNECD Regional Director. “Our role at the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development is to collaborate with partners and city leaders to recruit new industries to Tennessee, but just as importantly, to support our existing businesses by helping them find the talent they need.”
Recognizing Tennessee’s Centennial Institutions
CBU is among organizations being recognized as Tennessee’s centennial institutions. These businesses and institutions reflect the strength and diversity of Tennessee’s economy, fostering resilience and opportunity across the state.
“To say that we are proud of these businesses is an understatement,” said TNECD Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter in an earlier release. “These legacy companies have seen great success, overcome obstacles, survived the pandemic and remain pillars in their communities. I am honored to recognize each of them for contributing to our state’s history and spurring economic growth in Tennessee.”
CBU’s Role in Memphis’ Future
As Memphis continues to grow, CBU remains integral to the city’s fabric. The university’s ongoing focus on student success, innovation, and community engagement ensures it will continue shaping the future of Memphis and beyond.
This recognition is a testament to the strength of CBU’s mission and the unwavering support of our faculty, students, alumni, and community partners,” said Brother Chris Englert, Interim CBU President. “For 153 years, the Brothers have served this community with education for all, and we proudly stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. We are honored to be among Tennessee’s legacy institutions and remain committed to empowering individuals and uplifting our community for generations to come.
Today’s recognition celebrated both history and vision, honoring CBU’s past contributions and embracing its future. For 153 years, CBU has been a cornerstone of Memphis, and its legacy of excellence continues to inspire.
